For those aiming to register with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in the USA and the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK, understanding the required OET pass marks is essential. To meet ECFMG requirements, candidates need a minimum score of 350 in Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and 300 in Writing. For GMC registration, higher scores of 350 in all four components are needed, and candidates must also pass the PLAB exam. To meet the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) requirements, applicants must achieve the following minimum scores in a single test administration:

  1. Listening: 350
  2. Reading: 350
  3. Writing: 300
  4. Speaking: 350

Comparison with UK General Medical Council (GMC) Requirements
For international medical graduates looking to practice in the UK, the General Medical Council (GMC) requires different standards. To sit for the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) test or to apply for FY1 (Foundation Year 1) positions, the following OET scores are required:

  1. Listening: B (350-440)
  2. Reading: B (350-440)
  3. Writing: B (350-440)
  4. Speaking: B (350-440)

Applicants who do not achieve the minimum score on one or more sub-tests must retake all four OET Medicine sub-tests (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) and achieve the minimum scores in one test administration. There is no limit on the number of times you can retake OET Medicine, subject to scheduling availability. For eligibility in the 2025 Pathways, applicants must achieve these scores on or after January 1, 2023. If an applicant has already achieved the minimum passing scores on each of the four components on or after this date, they do not need to retake the OET Medicine. These applicants must ensure their test results are released to ECFMG.The UK requirements are notably stringent, as candidates must also sit for the PLAB exam in addition to the OET. In contrast, in the USA, candidates can take the OET even before attempting the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 exams.
